Believing the Lie by Elizabeth George

4.0

I'm giving this a 4 because I love Elizabeth George and the characters she has created so much, but it's definitely not my favorite of hers. Two big reasons: 1. The lack of a real mystery was unsatisfying. 2. OMG, please let Deborah come to terms with her infertility. I don't have much sympathy for her any more, and her ridiculous pursuit of Alatea was infuriating. She should feel bad for her role in Alatea's death.

I also agree with reviewers who questioned the depictions of sexuality and why George felt the need to throw in a gay man who destroys his family by coming out, a lover who decides to remain in the closet and marry a woman chosen by his parents, a son who gets involved in a child pornography/suicide plot, and a transgendered cousin-in-law who dies because of her secret. It was a bit much.

The end was devastating, and I'm curious to see where George will go with it.

All that said, I enjoyed the book and will look forward to the next, as usual. I just hope it contains a real mystery.
