I have learned that Etty Hillesum was an unbelievably special person. Her talent is inconceivable and her lust for life is unlike anyone I have ever known. It was an abstract feeling to hear a 29 year old victim of the Holocaust talk about her stomach ache, then the next day about the man she thinks she is in love with. Etty’s diary showed the transition of life in the Netherlands as she became more restricted and prejudice closed in on her. Often referred to as the adult Anne Frank, Etty Hillesum’s diary is vastly unrecognized. It truly was a privilege to hear her story.
