The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky
4.0
I'm in two minds.
On one hand, this is an anthem for a certain kind of high school experience. There are no easy answers as trauma stacks on top of trauma. But through love and friendship we can find an escape. There's something seductive about being plucked from crowd by the older kids. And made to feel part of the gang.
But on the other hand the protagonist is 15, and is shepherded around from one event to another by a group of hard partying 18-year-olds. Taking the freshman under your wing is one thing. But turning one into your sloppy plaything and occasional friend-with-benefits makes me feel gross.
