A Dawn of Onyx

I'm not sure why this didn't really grab me. I do read a fair amount of 'romantasy', and I got this because it had been mentioned in a romance newsletter (actually put it on my wish list, and my datefriend bought it for me, which was sweet but if he'd asked I would have picked something higher in priority, lol).
I do often read books that are marketed as "kid's books" or "young adult" (or whatever the latest marketing category name is) and if they are good, I don't notice anything being dumbed down or less interesting because of the young character's perspective or the worldbuilding designed to appeal to that audience. But this one just didn't hit me right.
For instance, the names of the countries are gemstones but also each country has weather and a color scheme that matches? I dunno, I can suspend disbelief with the best, but make it worth my while. Maybe later in the series this will pay off somehow, but I don't think I'll keep reading to find out.
