This book just wasn’t for me. There was some great imagery of a developing modernity but it was shrouded in so many metaphors of shit that I could barely focus. There are some passages about the ephemerality of human life that are really interesting, and a lot of the writing itself is beautifully done, but I found the plot itself to be quite lacking, as well as an extremely complex middle section about marijuana and Plato’s cave that just made me question its purpose in the text.
