A Gentleman in Moscow
by Amor Towles
First and foremost, the writing in this was just superb. I loved the wit, the descriptions, the loving details... all of it!
Second, I think I fell in love with pretty much all the characters, save one. Read the book and I'm sure you'll be able to guess which one it is. They were well-developed and I found myself caring for them a lot more than I thought I would. After all, this book is, on the surface, about the day to day life of a former Russian aristocrat on house arrest in the Metropol Hotel.
Which brings me to number three... Who knew that a book about the day to day life of a former Russian aristocrat on house arrest in the Metropol Hotel could be so compelling?! I'll admit, it started off a little slow for me, but it quickly found a groove and I found myself unable to get out of it. And the end! I loved the end :)
This is a book I would usually have passed over, if I'm to be honest. I'm so glad I gave it a chance.
