The Accidental Tourist
by Anne Tyler
About 50 pages into this book, I put it down. I was completely indifferent to it and felt no rush to get back into it. I figured 50 pages was too soon to cry uncle, so I picked it back up. Happy to say that was a good decision. The characters started really clicking with me. Especially Muriel. She is a combination of tough and vulnerable that I found quite endearing.
A problem I had with the book was the dog training. I am opposed to choke collars and any type of physical pain/discomfort to correct behavior. Muriel used both. Bad Muriel.
The Accidental Tourist tackles grief, isolation and relationships with affection and humor.
"During the course of the evening he chewed a pencil to splinters, stole a pork-chop bone from the garbage bin, and threw up on the sun porch rug; but now that he could sit on command, everyone felt more hopeful."
" The real adventure, he thought, is the flow of time; it’s as much adventure as anyone could wish. And if he pictured Ethan still part of that flow - in some other place, however unreachable- he believed he might be able to bear it after all."
