The Gift
by Rilzy Adams
Broken hearts do mend.
Maya knew loss all too well. She'd lost her parents at an early age, moved from foster home to foster home until she came to live with Charlotte and her parents. That's when she found a real family and her best friend. Maya and Charlotte's husband Jaxson were oil and water, fire and ice, Tom and Jerry...they did not get along. However, Maya was Charlotte's only family. When Charlotte couldn't conceive, Maya reluctantly agreed to be her surrogate. The first time didn't go so well, but the second time took and the two sister/friends were above the moon. Before Charlotte could tell her husband, she was killed in a botched bank robbery. When Maya shows up to the repast after the funeral, Jaxson wants her gone. She has to tell him that she's carrying their baby and that is what Charlotte planned to tell him at dinner. In his grief, he tells her to get rid of it. The "logic brigade" get together and get him to realize he may regret his decision, plus Charlotte amended her will to have Jaxson and Maya raise their child should something happen to her. How will 2 people who can't stand being in the same room, live together, and raise a child? Things get complicated, messy, sweet, complicated, and messy all over again, but it's worth the journey.
