Queer Villains of Myth and Legend
by Dan Jones
informative
lighthearted
fast-paced
this book is a misnomer, to start. i knew it would be mainly pop culture, just a glance through the index could tell you that, but it's 50% if not more pop culture characters - 'myth and legend' is just a straight up lie. now onto the main. each essay is far too short, and a large amount of them don't even say anything. just yeah, this movies overtly queer! we don't need an essay on that, if you can even call these that. at 200ish pages, you have space to flesh out each essay, and cut out less relevant ones. third, you can tell this was written by a man, just by the way the female characters are described in comparison to the male. if i cared enough to read this again i could point on so many weird and misogynistic writing choices, alongside a few odd transphobic sections, specifically around characters who are transfemme coded. it gives james summerton misogyny. in conclusion, this book did not say anything, the author did not say anything and no real interesting point was made because the essays were far too short, and the misogyny and transmisogyny really didn't help.
