Coptown is set in 1974 Atlanta and Kate Murphy is about to experience her first day on the police force. Not only has Kate walked into a misogynist work environment tensions are high after the death of a couple of police officers. Kate is eventually teamed up with Maggie who comes from a family of cops but that does not mean she has any special privileges in this man's world. The two of them begin to investigate the murders and try to discover who the 'shooter' is.
I have never read any of Karin Slaughter's work before and had no expectations as to what I was getting into. What intrigued me was the setting 1974 Atlanta and as you read, you understand why the novel is set in the past.
This is hard to read, the treatment of women is awful in this book but so is the treatment of everyone else. No one is spared the hatred, abuse, bullying and violence in this story and there are very few redeeming characters. So why keep reading? It is an engaging story and Slaughter is able to hook you in. The characters are well developed and you find yourself torn between wanting to support them in their endeavours or slap them for being awful.
I enjoyed the read.
