Panic by Lauren Oliver

Interesting concept.

Initially I was pulled in, finding Heather sympathetic and Dodge intriguing. The small-town microcosm sense of despair, and the desperation of many high schoolers to escape it, rang largely true in its portrayal. And curiosity over the game kept me engaged to see what would happen next.

After about the halfway point the pacing went through a bit of a slump. By then I'd lost a lot of my liking for most of the characters. (I expected Natalie to stab someone in the back almost constantly, so never really formed any attachment to her. Bishop came off flat, and Dodge gradually passed my personal point of no return in terms of disregard for his motives.) And character development felt sparse outside of Heather.

The book wraps up well--albeit more thanks to luck and coincidence than satisfying inevitability or smarter choices made. But there's no real resolution as to the glaring mystery at hand. I suppose that will be used to generate interest in more books in the series.
