In the Dream House by Carmen Maria Machado

dark emotional hopeful informative reflective sad tense medium-paced

4.5

This is one of the most captivating books I've ever read. I knew nothing about this going in which honestly was for the best. The writing style is extremely fluid switching between past and present, second and forst person narration. Sometimes throwing you right into a moment and sometimes looking through the lens of time and memory.

In the Dream House takes an unflinching examination of very heavy subjects, especially domestic abuse, reading as part horror story, part diary, part crime case, and part reclamation.

The half star deduction is for a mention of "Israeli couscous" in the Dream House as House in Florida section.
