Most Ardently: A Pride & Prejudice Remix by Gabe Cole Novoa

emotional funny hopeful fast-paced

5.0

Most Ardently is a heartwarmingly tender remix of the beloved classic Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austin. In this iteration, the woman we have always know as Elizabeth Bennet is actually Oliver Bennet, a transman living a double life. Darcy is just as shy and socially awkward as ever, however this time he is coming to terms with his sexuality as a gay man. Oliver and Darcy meet, they go to an incredible book shop, they flirt, they dance and they kiss, all as they figure out how to be happy and true to themselves.

Even though changes have been made, some things remain constant. Wickham is awful in this book, as is Mr. Collins. Jane is just as lovely and empathetic, Mrs. Bennet is still a woman of mean understanding, little information, uncertain temper and weak nerves. Lydia and Kitty are still the most determined flirts to ever make their family ridiculous.

The book is fast paced and does skip over a bunch of things from the original, keeping the focus completely on Darcy and Oliver. It is heartbreaking to read Oliver's dysmorphia as he is dead-named, misgendered and experiences transphobia/homophobia but his euphoria of being able to live the way he wants does counteract that heartbreak.

Overall, if you are a fan of P&P, regency romance, lgbtqia+ romances etc., please give Most Ardently a read, you'll be giggling and kicking your feet in no time.
