Bewilderness
by Karen Tucker
A beautiful but terrible ode to the the control that drugs can have over one’s life, Bewilderness holds none of its punches, showing all the jagged edges of both Irene and Luce’s lives and decisions as they twist and turn down increasingly desperate paths. Tucker is able to show just how lost both girls become in their addictions, while also still holding onto their humanity, which I appreciated - drug addicts are often not given that grace in the media we consume, and it makes her story all the better that she still treats her characters like the people they are. While neither Irene or Luce are terribly like-able protagonists, they’re real - and that’s what makes this book special, along with Tucker’s sparse, harsh prose that adds to the story. I really enjoyed this one and what it had to say about addiction, female friendship, and loss - and how each of these things can cause one to make some terrible decisions.
