The Pearl by John Steinbeck
2.0

Reminded me of the alchemist in a fun way. It has similar themes but takes them in a different way. That said, Steinbeck definitely engaged in the trope of the "noble savage" in his description of the indigenous characters, and the characters also feel flat in the way they conform to archetypal gender behavior (the main character is a manly man and his wife really loves to support him). As an aside, I recently read Marx's writing on the fetishism of commodities, and I feel this story naturally complements that quite well.
