The Silver Chair by C.S. Lewis
3.0

As I near the end of the series, I find myself less charmed by Lewis' writing (which is still charming) and more annoyed by the ham handed allegories. The lone lamb and sea of lilies in the Voyage of the Dawn Treader may have been the low point but there are scenes in this one which are equally heavy handed - i.e. Aslan insisting Jill drink from his stream despite her terror or else she will die, and later forcing Eustace to drive a thorn through his paw. This book dragged through the middle because the characters are universally unlikable but it did pick up at the end. Not coincidentally, that may have been because of a return of the mugs of frothing chocolate and refreshing ices and the kind of delightful description which made these books endearing in the first place.
