Honestly, I think this might be the best book I’ve ever read. Other comments and reviews I have seen do not seem to appreciate it as much, but I think it’s a really complex and interesting story that deals with so many important themes; race, motherhood, illness, to name but a few. The language is absolutely beautiful, and the descriptions of the main character’s thoughts are so raw, they give me a physical reaction.

The protagonist of the book is Antara, whose already strained relationship with her mother becomes even worse as she has to begin caring for her Ma who is showing signs of dementia. Antara is reliving her childhood as she is trying to get her mother to remember their past.
