This was one of my favourite reads of the year, and an unexpected one. Thank you to Borrow Box and the library. It felt especially relevant to read in the aftermath of the election and the literary crisis happening in America in the recent years. There’s a very t chapter with an Indian-American doctor discussing how the rest of the world sees America and it was very relevant to me as someone who’s British. It’s also a book on the power of reading and literacy. There isn’t one main character, but there are multiple main characters if that makes sense. It was a slow start but soon picked up and I read 250 pages in one sitting. All characters have a depth to them, even the villains with most townsfolk being redeemable but some not. The issues woven into the story are importantly and prevalent and effortlessly touched upon. So much is covered and done well, and all ties into it being a small town. Religion is a huge deal and impacts the story greatly. It’s also just fun to see two middle aged women have a battle of wills while still having to be charming and polite as southern women. This is definitely a happy ending and one read I’m really glad I picked up
