Sooley by John Grisham
2.0

I honestly do not understand how this book has a 4.18 rating, apart from having Grisham's name on it. The writing was lazy and boring and totally nonsensical. The thought of a kid who could barely make a basket becoming such a break out star, with skills rivaling the best in the NBA, in just a couple of months is ridiculous. The game sequences were boring and unnecessary. The fact that he used the plight of the South Sudanese is despicable, especially with how little effort he put into building up the people he used. The ending is just beyond ridiculous. Sooley is a kid who has worked harder than anyone else for the entire book and is so focused on saving his family, the thought that he would miss a phone call with his mother for some girl is so out of line with the character Grisham just spent 90% of the book building, that it made no sense. An eighteen year old kid who never smoked or drank, is suddenly downing beers, smoking and popping pills and then dies is a huge slap in the face to the reader. Why couldn't Sooley have just succeeded? He could have signed his contract and still brought his family and Grisham still could have gotten the tear jerker he was looking for. It will be a long time before I read another Grisham book, what a total disappointment.
