After reading Uzumaki, I really wanted to dive into more Junji Ito. I heard this one was very strange, and it definitely was! The walking fish were genuinely scary, which I didn’t expect as I thought they might be more silly than scary. However, it was a bit repetitive and the ending felt rushed.
I was left with so many questions about how the legs were created and why they were multiplying so quickly and taking over the world. It felt similar to a virus.
The girlfriend character was very one-dimensional, most of her scenes were just her screaming about the fish or the smell. The art was amazing and horrifying, as expected. At the end, it includes one of his best known short stories: The Enigma of Amigara Fault (the person-shaped holes) which was a nice surprise! Overall, I enjoyed it but I don’t think it’s his best work.
