I Want to Die but I Want to Eat Tteokbokki by Baek Se-hee

emotional sad slow-paced

1.5

I really wanted to like this book, but I couldn't connect with the writer or her struggles. Some sentiments she shared were relatable, but for something that was recommended to me as deeply profound and insightful, I didn't get that from this. The overall writing was really flat and the tone was dry. This may be due to translation and cultural differences, but it wasn't an enjoyable read for me.

The narrator came across as self-absorbed, without any real payoff or conclusion from her therapy. It just ends, and left me feeling like I'd just spent a couple hours with a toxic friend dumping all their tedious drama on me.

I especially didn't like the part that discussed suicide as a "free death". While honest, it felt like a dangerous concept to include in a book marketed as self-help for depression.
