Rain Reign
by Ann M. Martin
Superb middle-grade novel with a heroine I'd be proud to have as my own daughter. (She loves homonyms, prime numbers, and rule-following!) Unfortunately, Rose's father doesn't appreciate her unique personality, and neither do her classmates or teacher. Luckily, she has a doting Uncle Weldon and devoted canine companion Rain. There are oh so many feels to be felt while reading this book: sympathy for Rose whose Asperger's (and low income household) sometimes makes it hard to fit in with her peers, happiness as an unexpected school visit by Rain facilitates friendship between Rose and others in her class, worry when Rain gets lost outdoors without a collar during a thunderstorm, and even more emotions which I won't specify to avoid spoilers. I strongly recommend this book to readers young and old, especially those who love someone with autism, adore dogs, had/have trouble fitting in, or want to see life through the eyes of a clever girl who must navigate many challenges.
