Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates

4.0

“Here is what I would like for you to know: In America, it is traditional to destroy the black body — it is heritage.”

Similar to James Baldwin’s The Fire Next Time where he writes the book as a letter to his nephew, Ta-Nehisi Coates writes a letter to his teenage son about the realities of being black in current-day America. However, the ultimate message from both of these books are different, and on opposite sides of the same coin. I'm still reading it but I'll share my thoughts once I'm done.

"I write you in your 15th year, And you know now, if you did not before, that the police departments of your country have been endowed with the authority to destroy your body. . . . I tell you now that the question of how one should live within a black body, within a country lost in the Dream, is the question of my life, and the pursuit of this question, I have found, ultimately answers itself.”

It’s a telling of the unfortunate circumstances black bodies are forced to rationalize, even when logic is not reason enough for all the wrongdoing. (how do you make wrong right? you dont) This is the answer to “Make it make sense” except, that’s an impossible task that he takes on so well. This is a must-read - especially in these times, where the fate of America is so uncertain.

I have to warn you, if the elections have exhausted your mind, save this read for later when your heart isn’t as heavy. Take care of your Self and take your time with it.
