Kelsea Raleigh has been in hiding with her devoted servants after the death of her mother, Queen Elyssa, for the last 19 years. During this time the land of Tearling, led by the Reagent, her uncle, has been paying duties to the Red Queen, ruler of the powerful land Mortmense. The tattered remnants of the Queens Guard arrive on her 19th year to safely bring her back to the Keep to stake her rightful claim. If Kelsea does not succeed in taking back the throne and successfully defending Tearling, the Red Queen will destroy them all.

I’m happy to say that I’ve finally read a book that’s been languishing on my shelves for the last 10+ years. The Queen of the Tearling was such a quick read. At 434 pages I was expecting this to take me all month but I read it in less than a week. The writing was excellent and I found myself thinking about it long after I put it down.

What I really liked about this fantasy piece was that the author really showed how multilayered people can be. The focus was on the land and the issues the Queendom has been facing for a long time. The author deals with racism, prejudice and classicism all in a respectful way. I really liked that the author spent time focusing on the issues and only gave us glimpses of the evil Queen. The focus was where it was needed and where it was important.

What a solid, great read. I really found this powerful and enjoyed it, 4.5✨!
