House of Flame and Shadow by Sarah J. Maas

This was EVERYTHING it should have been
My whole brain is very scattered. I really haven’t slept since this book came in my hands.
First foremost I think this book is going to be very polarizing to the fandom because there was a lot of expectations going in and also this book really did switch up from her usual ”fairycorn” box that she’s been put it.
This was fantasy first and second and then sci-fi and then romance fourth- there was the romance, but it was the very last thing on everybody’s mind.
I am very pleased with how everything turned out - the careful reading that I did really did pay off. My thoughts were mostly correct. I think I was only wrong about three bigger things and I was correct about all the other bigger things which I do feel very good about and it also makes me very secure in Sarah’s writing. I had a lot of anxiety going into this book because i was like “did I put Sarah on a pedestal? Did I put too much on her” and I was really pleasantly surprised. (And yes I’m feeling like a smug a-hole)
Even with all of my careful reading, she still managed to shock me … she still managed to make me gasp before air multiple times.
And again with Sjm, she left me with a lot of questions where are certain things going to go and yet she also satisfied me in a way because it did not end in a cliffhanger and everything felt settled. I feel calm, and I’m just ready to move into the next with her on her time - I saw those hint at what she was pushing towards… LETS GO!!!
I think this book is going to be very polarizing to the fandom, because there was a lot of expectation on how it could’ve gone. But this was a crescent city book through & through from the pacing to the POV’s- it stay true to its core as a CC book. Sjm could’ve very easily made this into a fan service “cash grab” and I respect the fact that she did not. She opened the door. She’s going to walk through that door, but THIS book stayed very true to itself.
I do not entertain the fact that I am better than Sarah in anyway, but there was one major plot point that made me tilt my head and go that’s an interesting way that she decided to direct it. I’m curious on the thought process of that because there was an other answer that could have been used but I like the way that she used every character to solve the bigger problem so in a way I almost prefer it despite the fact that I was confused for a second. But I honestly think that’s my only con and it’s not even a con. It was more of just like “OK ground yourself for a second there babe.”
I was honestly floored by the amount of oh wow moments. Like the people who came to help in the end …that was very emotional for me and it really changes the way that you view certain things in the other books when you have a new perspective and I think that’s the beauty of Sjm she really does that with characters that you think could be evil and it turns out we just hadn’t seen the whole picture. And it made me LOVE a *wink wink* character whom I’m normally neutral on.
All in all, I am sad that it’s over, but I am very happy with the conclusion… now can we please talk about what’s gonna be happening in the acotar world because Sarah left some things…
