Exodus by Kate Stewart

“I don’t get a happy ending. I just get an ending.”

Okay, who’s ready to start breaking stuff?

It’s not as if she doesn’t warn us: she warns us in the hecking prologue for Flock. This is not a love story; it’s a unrelenting shit storm. It’s a waking nightmare. It’s like everyone has knives for hands & tongues— they can’t move an inch without slicing into each other (and me tbh).

The first half of this book had my jaw on the floor. I needed some heavy convincing to trudge through that slimy septic slush of a situation. I eventually sighed and left myself float adrift in the sewage but I put up a fight, I swear. The second half then grabs you by the throat while you’re still a little hazy from your cozy nap in the poop infested waters and starts slamming you against the wall until your teeth shatter. I’m only being like 30% dramatic. If you thought the men were cruel & terrible in Flock & the first half of Exodus— you’re in for a masochistic surprise.

Undoubtably, the best part of this series is the FMC’s arc. I understand why some women find her insufferable. Is it annoying how every single man we encounter is ready to destroy himself to love her? Yes. Yes it is. However, her development & understanding of how to live well while loving so ferociously is poignant. I accidentally spoiled the major plot points of Exodus while reading reviews (my b) BUT I kept reading anyways to watch her step at least a little out of the nonsense & come into her own, whatever that meant and THAT did not disappoint me.

Don’t read this if you want easy & even satisfying. I can’t guarantee you won’t be let down by this series. I am not confident I would recommend it. However, you bet your booty I’m reading the extended epilogue turned 3rd book of a duet to see if I get a little more payoff.
