The Observer
by Marina Endicott
This book is a work of fiction told in the style of a memoir. It’s a beautifully crafted slice-of-life story of a young woman whose partner is a new RCMP officer in a small, rural Alberta community, though anyone familiar with small Canadian towns will see it as familiar.
There is no plot, just tales of day-to-day life: the long hours expected of new people in a small detachment, the financial hardship of a young couple just starting out together, and the fact that the loved ones of first responders are not immune to the stresses related to their partners’ work. The book also deals frankly with the toll the job can take on the mental health of first responders.
The book is quite melancholy in tone, but not in a dreary way. All in all, it’s quite a pleasant read.
