My Heart Is a Chainsaw by Stephen Graham Jones
3.0
HONESTLY HONESTLY I really wanted to like it with the half-Indian protagonist and when they mention in the synopsis that she's going through abuse I'm like OK human story female protagonist GIMME IT
I initially heard that there's a lot of references to other slasher films which made me torn about like am I gonna be lost with all the references or am I gonna love the little nuggets - definitely had moments for both.
The main thing that irked me was the stream-of-consciousness becomes TOO much. like no one is out here obsessing over slashers the way Jade does - like you can't be thinking about slashers every SINGLE second like I don't buy it. Like when THINGS are happening IN REAL LIFE - so many moments I would have rather heard her feeling scared or hurt but instead, it's ANOTHER reference, it made the character seem a bit naive or self-absorbed? which made me like her less.
I read a review called jade's voice CHAOTIC which is exactly what I think it is. It's definitely a slow burn so which also made me more annoyed at Jade's stream of consciousness.
