The Ten Loves of Mr. Nishino
by Hiromi Kawakami
I think it's a general consensus by most fans of Kawakami that this...isn't our favorite work by her.
I still fell deeply in love with the easy, calm way that Kawakami writes and I still found myself comfortably settling into this story however, the content of this story was much less enjoyable to read. The story lacked the sort of lyrical whimsy that exists in her story. Nishino is deplorable, and I have no sympathy at all for him. All of the women he victimized and took advantage of deserve a good break. This wasn't a totally unenjoyable journey thanks to the beautiful prose - but I also found myself rolling my eyes over and over again at how pathetic Nishino made himself seem. To then suddenly shift to rage by how overpowering he is. He's just one walking red flag with every single one of these short stories.

For those who are trying out Kawakami's works, don't put this first on your list.
C/W: sexual content (much of it being quite dubious and I would say without consent and done manipulatively), language
