The Stranger Beside Me by Ann Rule

2.0

yo this book would never end lmao

i don't know if it's rule's writing style, or the fact that she was extremely sympathetic toward bundy for most of the story, or a combination of both, but this book was so boring!!

and then there was an epilogue, an afterword, another note 6 years later, another note 12 years later, etc. by the end, i was so sick of hearing about bundy's delayed execution and rule's conflicted feelings about the whole thing that i basically was just skimming through the pages.

also, may i just say that for all the "hype" bundy gets, his story is pretty dull? like, he's not an interesting guy, his crimes - while horrific - were not all that unique or exciting, and overall i just kept thinking, "this guy is only popular because he was one of the first of his kind." which was fortunate for him because he loved the spotlight, but yeah.. if he had done this at a later time, when more sinister killers were already known, he would have been a passing headline at best.

if you're really interested in his cases and life, this book is fine. but honestly, i think reading his wikipedia page would be just as sufficient and save you a lot of time.
