“In the first bad year, we had talked only of escape.” - Girl A.
This book follows Lex Gracie and her siblings who grew up in their parents’ House of Horrors. However, she doesn’t want to think about it or about her identity as Girl A: the one who escaped, the eldest sister who freed her siblings. Years later, when her mother dies in prison and leaves Lex and her siblings the family home, she can’t run from her past any longer. Together, Lex and her sister Evie plan to turn the house into a force for good. But first she has to come to terms with her siblings, and the childhood that they shared.
Wow this book is intense and dark. This story follows Lex and her siblings both in the past and present as they recount the abuse and neglect they faced at the hands of their extremely religious parents, and follows them in the present when they are brought together after the death of their mother. This story gets pretty dark, emotional, and has some hard-hitting twists. This story captured me from the beginning, and also felt very eerie since there have been some cases on the news of abuse similar to this story in the past couple years. That being said, there are lots of content warnings for this book, so look out for those if you need to. Overall, this was an excellent debut and I suspect it will be much talked about!
