The King of Black Diamonds by Nicole S. Goodin
2.0
It's not enemies-to-lovers because they didn't really hate each other and just bickered a bit. It's not bully, at least not by the MMC to FMC. It's refreshing in a way because there are too many books right now that are dark and involves stuff that are a little difficult to swallow. I like that this book just revolved around high school drama instead of something deeper. Although...
I don't know why it bugs me so much but I freaking hate that twist at the end. The author thinks she's being clever with it but I saw that shit from the first few chapters and that shit's been played in The Allstars series (KC Kean) and Pacific Prep (RA Smyth). I hate it to the point it killed a couple of stars from my rating. Hate it to the point that I literally threw my phone (just not against the wall). It made me so mad idk.
Berlin (kickass name) is your standard snarky/sassy FMC who went up against the popular guys on day one of being in a new school. I loooooove snarky, sassy FMCs but even I thought her act is OTT. For someone who's supposed to be smart, she made some erroneous assumptions and was a brat about them.
Cullen (like Twilight!), is your typical king of the school, captain of the championship team, star player who definitely thinks he's all that but I liked that despite thinking he was gonna get back at Berlin, he didn't really do anything to her. He fell first and I loved how he crumbled and just went along with it.
My favorite character is Pax because I love the easy going ones. I would have loved to be his best friend, too.
Don't get me wrong, the book is funny and I recommend it to those looking for something light and all about senior year high school drama (set in New Zealand, btw!) but my rating is that way because my enjoyment of the book is impacted by that twist/bomb at the end (like at the very, very, end).
