Dear Zoo: A Lift-The-Flap Book
by Rod Campbell
The writing is pretty crappy in this book but the pop-ups are fabulous! You'd spend hours as an adult picking up the flaps to reveal the animal underneath, folded and cut in such a way that you get this delightful pop up that is pretty much wow. Kai obviously has slightly more discerning taste that I do and is not taken by frills and whistles (i.e., the pop up animals). The writing is mediocre at best and for a read-aloud, it's just terrible. Here's an example (off the top my head, because I've read this book a lot):
"I wrote to zoo to send me a pet. They sent me a camel but he was too grumpy so I sent him back."
"I wrote to the zoo to send me a pet. They sent me a frog. But he was too jumpy so I send him back."
"I wrote to the zoo to send me a pet. They sent me an elephant but he was too big so I sent him back."
Okay, are camels known for their grumpiness? This is the first I've heard. Also, is that really the message you want to send to your very impressionable toddler? That if something is not as you expect or has a trait that is disagreeable to you, you get rid of it? I know that kids books are not meant to be taken literally, but the message here kinda sucks and the only thing this book has going for it is the cool cut out, fold up, pop up animals. And man, those are awesome!
