SPOILERS IF YOU HAVE NOT READ FABLE

Namesake is the follow-up novel to Fable, picking up right where Fable left off. After being captured by her father's rival trader, Fable has discovered that her father's old secondhand man, Clove, is working for the enemy, and she can't help but feel a sense of betrayal. Zola has plans for Fable, and has promised that if she cooperates that he will return her to the Narrows, and the Marigold. But first she must help him with a matter that is bigger than he is letting on, and while she's on a ship where she can't trust anyone, all she can do is comply. But crossing into the Unnamed Sea and finding out things about her mother's past, Fable will uncover some secrets that might change trade forever.

Namesake was the perfect follow-up to Fable in my eyes. It had enough action, new characters, and as the reader, we gained some knowledge into the minds of the characters we already knew. I personally like seeing character growth in stories, which I felt this lacked a little of, which is why it wasn't quite a 5 star read for me. I felt as though the characters were just going through the motions of what was happening instead of really learning anything from their interactions, and it seemed like there was trying to be character growth for some, but it just kind of fell flat. West in particular because it just seemed like he was stuck in his ways and though he would tell Fable he would or wouldn't do things, he just did whatever he wanted anyways. I also wasn't 100% convinced that he loved Fable enough to go behind his crew's back so many times, I just didn't get enough of that romance and intimacy that would warrant those actions.

I really enjoyed the world, and the characters, though I wish they had a little more substance. I would be really interested to learn more about gem sages and other trading routes with new characters, and I'm excited to see we will be getting a story about Paj and Auster. I would be really interested to see this world expand and grow into other stories, which we can only hope for!
