Gillian Flynn's exploration of female-specific cruelty has always been fascinating. This novel covers the intricacies of how bullying among girls looks way different than how boys bully each other, and can sometimes be even worse than bullying that ends at physical abuse. Even now in the 21st century, content involving "unmotherly" mothers is still stimagtized. However, Gillian Flynn approaches the subject matter to dispel the myth that women are innately nuturing, and shows how many ways the maternal instinct can go horribly wrong.
