It's tough to express the precise feeling I have for this book. On one hand, I mostly didn't enjoy the humor and general tone of the writing that much. I've never been a fan of the rapid switch between high brow melifluous prose and low brow, and this one's low brow being thoroughly steeped in internet tropes and attitude really kicks me out of immersion. I found myself with lots of smaller complaints including being bumped by statements that use melodrama to increase impact but that directly contradict things I was told before. On the other hand, the book eventually won me over a surprising amount given that I didn't love the style. I cried once and was thoroughly enthralled in several action scenes. So ultimately I don't quite fall in with the greater hype and fan base, but I'm by no means a hater. It's an easy recommendation to anyone that would enjoy the humor/writing style more.
Moderate: Child death, Chronic illness, Gore, Violence, Forced institutionalization, Murder, Injury/Injury detail
