The Lost City of the Monkey God by Douglas Preston

4.0

I was struck by how a city and culture - lost for 500 years-  in the Honduran jungle could be so relevant. I expected it to be an archaeological adventure story  - and it was - for the first half, at least. The twist in the second half of the book, confirms the legendary curse protecting the White City they set out to find, centering on the rare disease that members of the expedition unexpectedly bring back, and shifting the conversation to a discussion about the history of pandemics and the potential for future outbreaks, as they all fight for their lives in hospitals dependent on experimental treatments. Even Anthony Faucci makes a cameo. The story reminds us that if you're curious about humanity's future just look at what is buried in the ground - the universal fate of all civilizations is clear to see.
