A riveting read from start to finish. Niall Ferguson examines the reasons why "the West" has historically been such a dominant civilization and whether and how the balance of power is shifting. Essentially, he theorises that 6 components of Western civilization have been responsible for the sustained pre-eminence of the Western countries: competition, science, medicine, property, consumption and work ethic.

The author gives a panoramic view of history through these pages that is both enlightening and dazzling, explaining how the West obtained a competitive advantage over "the Rest." If you are interested in History and/or Economics, this is a thoroughly enjoyable read.
