He did Trixie so dirty. In the vein of In Cold Blood, a detached reflection on a crime the narrator could not have witnessed and was not privy to the emotional impact of - supported by the highly  dispassionate distance from most characters…apart from what felt like emotional manipulation of the worst sort - detached narration until my girl Trixie’s perspective, and torturing her to raise the emotional stakes. Ouch.
