Red Seas Under Red Skies by Scott Lynch

3.0

Lynch manages in this book to enhance the already entertaining dialogue and friendship building from the first book, and his wit achieves to inject an intented giggle even in the most grave of situations.

Some newly introduced characters are very fun to read alongside the main duo, while there seems to be a significant improvement in the description side of things compared to the Lies of Locke Lamora.

Although, I definitely had fun reading this book (taking a bit longer to finish than I expected), I have to argue that the pirate story nested in the initial story could very well be two separate books with much more success in terms of promises and set up.

Red Seas Under Red Skies is unfortunately not immune to plot holes, overextension of schemes and a general sense that Lynch might have taken a sharp turn left in the middle of his writing process.

--------------- MILD SPOILER PART ---------------

What bugged me the most, is that there is no proper setup to the solution of the stacked schemes that Locke involved himself into. The characters that appear in the final 100 pages of the book are first mentioned right before offering the relief, which is unfair for a series of books with well-known flashback sections and narration tricks.

Overall, it was an enjoyable read in spite of the obvious flaws, and it did not undermine my impatience for the third book. More like 3.9 stars never reaching 4.
