The Maverick by Jennifer Valenti

This book deals heavily on the topic of s*xual assault. If a sensitive reader, this book isn't suited for you.

Synopsis: Jane Valiante was s*xually assaulted by her to-be employer and is now on a journey to change an era. She's going to change the lives of many women.

Characters: Jane Valiante, the main character, has went through emotional and physical pain but yet she is shown as a strong character with vulnerable moments. She's human.
But she doesn't wish to speak up. She now has a job in which she loves and an opportunity of a lifetime. So she decides to work through it and put her employer's assault behind her.
But nothing can stay hidden, can it?
At first I pitied Jane's character, no one should have to go through what she did, but then I looked up to her, especially towards the end. She's defiant, strong and independent. She's a woman who won't be overcome by a man and she'll damn well show it.

Plot: The Maverick is a deeply emotional and empowering novel. The fact that this book was inspired by the author's own story made it even more emotional. It brought up many emotions within me as well as many questions. Why is it that the world works like this? What is it that makes people think their decisions are moral? This book has such a powerful message, a message telling you to be strong for there is light at the end of the tunnel. There is darkness, but there will always be light. I really loved this book and would definitely read the next book. If sexual assault isn't a sensitive topic for you, then I encourage you to give this book a go.
