To the Lighthouse by Virginia Woolf

4.0

Taking place, for the most part, over two days which are ten years apart, To The Lighthouse weaves between the consciousness of a cast of characters who have come together for a summer holiday. The “shabbily wealthy” family at the heart of the story are joined by a group of guests, from an old friend and Botanist, a young couple on the brink of engagement and a painter and spinster (who in my opinion is one of the best point of view characters of the book). It takes some time to get used to how effortlessly Woolfe goes from one characters thoughts to another (sometimes from sentence to sentence). However her writing as ever is melodious yet without excess. She masterfully creates the atmosphere of the two days with the Ramsey family, with the feeling of a sultry summer evening and a boat ride to the eponymous Lighthouse captured beautifully and yet also with no little amount of melancholy.
