The Magnolia Palace
by Fiona Davis
This book was sadly a disappointment. I really enjoyed reading about the history of the Frick family and about all of the different art pieces mentioned in the story. Every time an interesting little tidbit was mentioned, it was a lot of fun to google the particular moment in history or piece of art. These parts almost tempted me to rate this 3 stars. Almost.
The fictional story itself was just so bad. The characters were one-dimensional. The “murder mystery” element felt pointless and stupid. Mr. Frick was literally dying anyways. Why does it even matter? And don’t get me started on the 1966 timeline. I wish that wasn’t even included in the book at all. So pointless and stupid. If anyone has any recommendations for historical fiction books set in a similar setting/time frame that are actually good, I would love to hear about them!
