Love in a Torn Land: Joanna of Kurdistan: The True Story of a Freedom Fighter's Escape from Iraqi Vengeance by Jean Sasson

4.0

This is an important book about an important part of the world’s history, sadly a part that not a lot of people know about.
This book is about the Kurdish peshmerga and the Kurdish peoples fight against Saddam Hussein’s regime. It’s based on a true story, Joannas story, a peshmergas wife that fights for the Kurdish cause alongside her husband in the mountains. We follow Joanna from when she was a child in Bagdad and her experience of the war to her life as a peshmerga. When I read this book I realized that this isn’t just Joannas story, it’s the entire Kurdish peoples story. I recognized a lot of the emotions and experience because it’s my parents’ story, my auntie’s story and my uncle’s story. I’ve heard this story so many times, in so many different ways and it’s still relevant to hear it again. I recommend you to read this book and educate yourself.
