This book is mostly a popcorn flick to me. A middle of the road, decent story. I’m never one to bemoan purple prose too much, but… Mrs Parker did take a bit too far for me at times. The plot twists were done in such a way that only around page 250 ish the story truly felt like it had started.
The snark of our main girl wasn’t my thing per se and the random diversions to perspectives other than our main girl felt a bit cheap. They didn’t add anything to the overal story.
The Romance didn’t work for me either and the smut scenes felt a tad gratuitous for the kind of story being told. As if Parker tried to pander to the current surge in Romance books but didn’t have the heart nor the tension to make it feel natural
I suppose the intention was to create some kind of enemy to lover tale. Instead we just have a male lover interest who takes way to much verbal abuse to make the paring cute. If he gave as he got I could see past it… but he didn’t so it didn’t work for me
Also if a day is a day and a year is a year don’t make up words that just confuse the reader.
Last but not least: I adored the magic system, the descriptions of the world and the culture it included and the freaking consequences!!! Of using magic, riding dragons
