dark emotional hopeful sad

2.75

I know a lot of people love this book, but it didn't fully work for me. But it was all right, and I did somewhat enjoy it.

It's hard to put my finger on what exactly I didn't like. I think it might have something to do with the characters. They could perhaps have been fleshed out a little more?
Another thing I thought about, is that even though I haven't read a story quite like this before, it still felt like a book (or a mash-up of books) I have read before, in a way, and it therefore felt a little bland...
I think I would have wanted a more literary and in-depth writing style too, but that's clearly me having the wrong expectations.

I think the dark subject matter and the power dynamics were handled quite well though.

Again, most readers love this book, so I'm clearly in the minority here.
