All Quiet on the Western Front
by Erich Maria Remarque
3.5 ⭐️ - I mean this is an intense one as many war books are. This is the first one I have read about the First World War, and it does strike me how horribly technologically advanced war had become without the equivalent advances in medicine. While I didn’t find this the most smooth read, probably due to both the time it was written and the translation, I do respect the narrative specifically around how a generation of young men were cut down before they really even had a chance at life. I will say I found that some points of the story to not be as emotionally impactful as maybe it could have been - however, that last line went right to the feels. Glad to have read and crossed it off my list of classics!
