Annihilation by Jeff VanderMeer

4.0

I picked this book up from the library on Friday, intending to read it on my holiday... And finished the whole thing by Sunday, hours before I needed to board my flight. I'm kind of glad I didn't take it on holiday because it's one of those tense and creepy sci-fis, bordering on horror at times. It might have put a dampener on my whole "relaxing on the beach".

In this story there's a mysterious "Area X". It's an area of coastline countryside with a couple of ruined villages and a lighthouse, and most importantly it's totally locked away. Isolated, protected by the military for reasons unknown. Group after group of expeditions go in. Some come back, some don't. The story of "Annihilation" follows a biologist on the latest expedition through a series of reports she writes back about what the team find and what happens to them along the way.

I don't even know if I can confidently say "okay yeah this is an alien story" because having finished it I'm not sure it is. I liked that it left me with unanswered questions. The "okay but who was..." and the "what happened to..." type of questions that leave me wanting more. There are other books in this series, but as I write this I haven't decided if I'll seek them out. Certainly not for my holiday, but maybe some day.
