Deep and Dark and Dangerous by Mary Downing Hahn
4.0
Overall rating: 4/5
A reread from my childhood that was surprisingly better than I remembered. It wasn't scary, but the author nailed it with the creepy setting. A ghostly girl wearing a bathing suit, foggy setting of Maine, the creepy and dark lake. All were 10/10 and I see why I was so scared. Ali, Emma, & Dulcie weren't as fleshed out as I'd like them to be, but I was definitely getting sister vibes from Ali and Emma.
Also... lowkey... Dulcie might need CPS called on her 👀👀
As for the ghost girl and the mystery I was hoping for it to be a little darker but considering it's a middle grade I get why the author chose to go in a different direction which allowed me to see why Alis mom and Dulcie were the way they were...
Honestly, while it had horror aspects, this story was definitely more about the effects of generational trauma and guilt. I liked how the author chose to deal with grief and moving on.
I would definitely recommend this for middle schoolers as it's scary and teaches an important lesson with guilt and dealing with grief and loneliness.
