Actual rating 4.5! This book isn’t at all what I expected, which made it a strong read for me. Though I didn’t quite connect with the characters in the beginning, by the end I was thrilled and excited by everything that was happening.

Ren is a complex main character who is feared by many and finds herself torn between two worlds. She does her best with her complicated powers and I found her arc to be a sympathetic one. I look forward to seeing where she goes by the end. The side characters are all pretty interesting, though I am compelled by the Bloodied Prince. I can’t wait to see where his storyline goes.

The magics that are used are unique and dangerous, and lead to all sorts of trouble in a complicated and in-depth world. I loved the way everything was set up and how intricate the details were.

Most of what I enjoyed came from the political plots. Everything was shaded in grey and each side had its share of enemies, which left Ren with nowhere to run or feel safe. This also made the revelations, twists, and betrayals all the more intense. I honestly truly enjoyed the final few chapters, which took me to unexpected places and promises a stellar adventure.

A great book for anyone who likes morally grey characters, strong political/royalty plots, dark magic, and intense action scenes!
